International Dance Day will be celebrated in Bangladesh as elsewhere in world today through an array of programmes including dance performances, colourful processions and discussions.
Bangladesh Dance Artistes Association, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and several dance organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day.
World Dance Day is observed on April 29 across the globe since 1982 according to a decision taken by the International Dance Council and the UNESCO.
On behalf of the International Dance Committee, noted Belgian dancer and choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has given this year’s celebration message highlighting the spirit of dance.
The day’s event will begin with a procession at 9am from the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. A scheduled cultural programme in the evening at the National Theatre Hall of Shilpakala is the main attraction of the day.
State minister for children and women’s affairs Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury is expected to inaugurate the event as chief guest.
Dance exponent Gulam Mustafa Khan and Rawshan Ara Begum will be honoured with lifetime achievement award for their contributions to the art of dance.
‘The programme already got underway through a week-long fair at the plaza of the National Art Gallery of Shilpakala Academy on April 22, displaying costumes and other objects related to dance,’ an organiser told New Age.
Country’s oldest cultural institute Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts will arrange a day-long programme featuring discussions and cultural programme to celebrate the day at its headquarter at Waizghat, Sadarghat, president of the institute Shamsur Rahman Noor said.
Popular dance school Nrityanchal has also chalked out a day-long programme to celebrate the day. The main attraction of the programme will begin at 7pm at the Suhrawardi Uddyan, opposite to Bangla Academy.
Hundreds of dance artistes from across the country will perform at the show, renowned dancer Shiblee Mohammad, director of Nrityanchal, told New Age.
Kalpataru, the dance school of cultural organisation Shadhana, will organise cultural programme at Chhayanaut Bhaban tomorrow at 6:30pm.
