The show was a hit stage - in the XIX century hosted on the Warsaw stage more than 400 times. Popularity Weddings in OjcΓ³w was so great that dances from this performance hit to the salons and ballrooms. International Dance Day with Cracovia Danza
Alla Polacca
April 26th 2015
Teatr Ludowy, 5 PM
script and staging – Romana Agnel
choreography – Romana Agnel, Leszek Rembowski
costumes – Monika Polak-Luścińska
A performance Alla Polacca tells a story about the old Polish tradition which is the root of Polish culture and which still shapes Polish identity. Some of the rituals and customs presented in the performance are now just history, however many of them, although changed, still accompany the Poles in the crucial moments of their lives. Alla Polacca shows beauty of the old Polish tradition, which has enraptured and inspired the greatest European artists for hundreds of years. After all, polonaises were written by Johann Sebastian Bach and the Polish dances enjoyed great successes at the European courts.
Through the forms of the 17th and 18th century dances the performance presents old Polish customs, both those of the nobility and of the folk, as well as their mutual influences and inspirations. The polonaise, mazur, kujawiak, oberek and krakowiak, five Polish national dances, were popular in manor and at the European courts as well as in the poor thatched houses. That is why oberek, mazur and kujawiak, although in a little different form, are presented in two parts of the performance: At the manor house and In the folk way. Apart from the national dances, the performance presents other dance forms, such as Wesoły (Marry Dance), Bergamoszka (Bergamasque Dance) or polka.
Alla Polacca presents not only choreographies, but also all sorts of Polish plays, customs, rituals and even legends. At the manor house the party starts with a solemn dance with the use of lanterns, two noblemen present a traditional dance with sabers, and girls' harmless play with magic ends up with an arrival of the devil which can be defeated only by a legendary alchemist riding a rooster - Jan Twardowski. The second part of the performance, In the folk way shows the rituals and rites relating to the summer solstice and wedding ceremonies. During the Midsummer's Night, the feast of the harvest and fertility, girls are predicting their fortune in love. Enthralled young men are secretly peeping at them. Suddenly the fortune-telling turns into a joint party which is interrupted by an arrival of the Gypsy Woman, a frequent guest in old multicultural Poland. Next scenes show the wedding, in which the joint play and dancing alternate with traditional rites such as oczepiny, which signifies the moment of a girl's transformation into a woman.
Polish tradition presented in Alla Polacca is still alive, especially due to its music, which consists of authentic compositions created out of delight with Polish culture by such great artists as Rameau or Telemann. The audience can hear as well Chopin mazurkas arranged in folk style by Maria Pomianowska or Polonaise created by Wojciech Kilar, which accompanies traditionally the opening dance at a formal dance held a hundred days before the school-leaving exams in Poland. Many of the presented wedding rituals are still cultivated in Poland and the Midsummer's Night found its continuation in the Music Festival organized annually in many Polish cities in June.
