A day of dance in Paphos
By Bejay Browne
DANCE lovers from all over the island have been invited to celebrate International Dance Day in Paphos on Sunday.
Dance groups and individuals can participate in all sorts of dancing styles and rhythms including: Zumba, Dance Aerobics, Nia technique, Port des bras, Latin, belly dancing and traditional dances.
The event is organised by ‘Dance Culture Pafos’, a newly formed dance collective made up of dance teachers, dance artists and private dance schools.
It was created following an ideas work shop which supported Paphos’ successful bid for the European cultural capital title 2017- an honour which it shares with Aarhus in Denmark. The programme enabled the public and artists to participate and support the successful initiative.
Headed by Erica Charalambous, the newly formed collective aims to collaborate with artists from all communities in Paphos, Cyprus, Europe and the eastern Mediterranean.
“Our aim is to create a sustainable, organised, legal body in order to develop and enhance the art and practice of dance in our city and district. As a newly formed NGO our long term goal is to develop and strengthen the art and practice of dance leaving behind a legacy of creativity for younger generations,” she said.
The event will take place on Sunday, May 3 between 11am and 1 pm at the Municipal Baths in Kato Paphos, in front of ALEA cafe. The event is presented under the auspises of the International Dance Council – UNESCO (Counseil International de la Danse) and is supported by Paphos municipality and Alea Cafe.
