Dance Day - 2019
April 29
Yekaterinburg, Russia
Provincial Dances Theatre (www.dance-theatre.ru/eng) is holding a citywide event in Yekaterinburg (Russia) on International Dance Day. Yekaterinburg is considered to be the main hub of contemporary dance in Russia, and Provincial Dances Theatre is one of the most well-known Russian contemporary dance companies abroad, winner of multiple Russian dance awards, participant of international dance festivals.
Dance Day’s goal is to popularize contemporary dance and other contemporary art forms among city residents, while raising overall cultural level and providing opportunities to see the best examples of contemporary dance in non-stage settings.
Dance performances of various genres and styles will take place in the most unexpected places: libraries, office buildings, shopping malls, train stations, universities. Dance will become a part of the city environment, with the typical landscapes, central avenues and recreation zones of Yekaterinburg acting like stages. City residents will be able to not only see dance performances, but also participate in free dance workshops and interactive showings. Total number of dance sites open during the day and the evening – 20.
The main event of the day – a special “dance route” – will start at 17:30 at the “Glavniy Prospekt” gallery (Lenina avenue, 8). The route will continue via Lenina avenue and will include such sites as the entrance to the city hall, the city dam, the square at the city founders’ monument, “Stone flower” fountain. Each one of those dance sites will feature dance groups of various genres – contemporary, classical, ballroom, folk, hip-hop, krump, tap, and others. The route will take 3 hours and will culminate in a video installation on city buildings.
During the day there also will be dance flash-mobs in an office building, in a studio of a radio station, in a bank, in a train station, in a shopping mall.
Yeltsin Center, the main cultural hub of the city, will also feature a series of events for dedicated audiences and fans of contemporary dance. They will include lectures, round-table discussions, film showings of notable international dance pieces, workshops, etc.
