El Día Internacional de la Danza fue establecido por la Unesco en 1982, atendiendo a una iniciativa del Comité Internacional de Danza. Se eligió el 29 de abril, por ser el natalicio de Jean-Georges Noverre, innovador y estudioso de este arte, maestro y creador del ballet moderno.
